It’s all about branding …
They are all the same day by a different name, and each is celebrated very differently.
It’s a bit like how you differentiate yourself from the competition. After all Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day and Mardi Gras are all celebrating the same event today, but each resonates completely differently in our minds – religious, fun, super-fun! So in the same way – you may be offering a similar service, or make the same ‘widget’ as your competitors, but your passion, proposition and purpose, your core brand resonates with your customers or clients, and along with your visual branding, it’s what makes you special and stand out from the crowd.
The ‘back’ story!
Shrove (or ‘Shrive’) Tuesday falls the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent in the Christian calendar, which lasts for 40 days (well, 46 including the Sundays). Lent is the spiritual preparation for Easter (which falls on the 47th day) and is a period of fasting from food and festivities, or to do something good for others – a period of penance to absolve you from your sins.
So… on Shrove Tuesday – Mardi Gras – which actually means ‘Fat Tuesday’ is a feast day before fasting. The day to eat up all the fat and good (or bad!) stuff in the cupboard by making them into pancakes.
My pancake recipe
I like my pancakes thin and buttery!
1 cup of plain flour
1 cup of milk
1 egg (if you like your pancakes more eggy – put in two)
25g melted butter
Pinch of salt
Plus at least 50g more butter for frying
Mix it all up in a liquidiser, or whisk, melt a knob of the butter in the pan then use a small ladle to measure out each pancake as it goes in the frying pan. Cook for about 2 minutes, toss or turn, 1 min – until it looks right. The more butter in the pan, the browner and crisper they will be 😉
Serve with anything you like – my favourite is maple syrup and cream [watch out hips!]
